Welcome to the next post in our series of Product Snapshots in the Australian healthtech sector.

Say hello to DermEngine by MetaOptima.

In one sentence, describe your product?

DermEngine is intelligent dermatology software for the imaging, documentation and diagnosis of skin conditions including skin cancer, powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and hosted in the cloud, this smart dermatology system helps clinicians manage busy workflows with secure cross-platform access so they can focus on your patients - not the process.

What industry problem / challenge are you tackling?

2 in 3 Australians will develop skin cancer during their lifetime, causing immeasurable suffering to patients and their families. The healthcare system, meanwhile, spends billions of dollars each year treating the disease and caring for those it affects.

At the same time, Australia is facing a severe shortage of dermatologists, leading to wait times of six months or more. Melanoma can rapidly progress in as little as six weeks, and patient survival declines from 98% to 15% if treatment is delayed.

That’s where DermEngine and MoleScope come in. By equipping medical professionals and patients with the most advanced tools for intelligent dermatology, it will not only streamline workflows for faster, more efficient care, but support healthcare providers in their day-to-day workflows with confident, evidence-based decisions.

What is unique about your product in your market?

We enable GPs and Dermatologists with industry leading technology in the form of a software as a subscription (SaaS) product. They do not need a big clunky expensive piece of hardware to perform dermoscopic imaging and total body photography for skin cancer patients, they just need their existing computer with a smartphone.

We also integrate with all the major practice management systems (PMS) and pathology companies in Australia and New Zealand.

What is the biggest risk to your company?

We focus on skin checks at the moment. So if patients do not get skin checks, then Doctors will not use our platform. When is the last time you got a skin check?

What does success look like for the company?

We dominate Australia and New Zealand in the skin cancer market, then the US (we are establishing a team there now).

Then we expand to broader dermatology markets and grow into Asia, Europe and other major parts of the world.

Why should a health professional use DermEngine? For a GP wanting to do more skin checks, we are the ideal platform for that - its a low cost entry, and we can expand with your practice, rather than you having to decide whether to purchase a large piece of machinery upfront and work out the ROI and who will have access, maintenance costs, depreciation etc.

We can improve workflows with our AI and integration, meaning you can help you see more patients, diagnose more skin cancers and save more lives.
